Council in Brief: April 19

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s city council pushed back on numerous provincial actions with a flurry of resolutions at its meeting Monday evening. A trio of resolutions passed unanimously Monday opposed provincial plans to sever the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) from Lakehead University, asked the province to reconsider a recent order closing outdoor recreation amenities, and objected to plans to reduce vaccine supply to the area.   City opposes NOSM independence Councillors unanimously passed a motion opposing a provincial plan to sever the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) from Lakehead University. Mayor Bill Mauro, who proposed the motion, said the lack of consultation over the plan with Lakehead president Moira McPherson was unusual and worrying.

NetNewsLedger - 2020 International Student's Dinner Brings Cheer and Smiles

NetNewsLedger 356 Thunder Bay – LIVING – Thunder Bay has a growing number of International students. Students attending Lakehead University and Confederation college from across the globe are studying here in our city. The holiday season, especially this year with the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown in Ontario has presented some severe challenges for international students. Being far from home is hard enough. 2020 however with the pandemic and the provincial lockdown, means greater challenges. However, working with a determined team of volunteers, the decision was made to go forward with the dinner. However with COVID-19 there are a lot of needed changes. Seriously enforced social distancing, teams at The Hub’s Pick-Up Window who are all from the same household, masks, face shields and gloves for all the team along with advice from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit helped ensure the dinner could move forward this year.

NetNewsLedger - 2020 International Students Holiday Dinner

NetNewsLedger 340 Thunder Bay – COVID-19 has hammered so many events throughout 2020. It is very positive to share that not everything has been shutdown because of the virus. This year’s International Students Holiday dinner is a go. It is likely more important this year than last year, many of the International Students in Thunder Bay who in past years were invited to people’s homes are not going to, and likely would not want to accept those invitations. This year, once again, with a growing list of sponsors, the International Student’s Dinner will provide 100 students with a holiday meal. The 2nd Annual Welcome Home Holiday Dinner – Pick Up Edition for our international students would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of beautiful people in our city and the sponsorship of amazing local businesses and organizations.
