Five Saugus firefighters graduate state Firefighting Academy
Five Saugus firefighters completed an intensive 50-day training program to graduate from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.
The Saugus firefighters in the Academy’s Class 289 include James Cresta-Devine, Patrick Cross, Ryan Henehan, Christopher Hunt and Drew Oxley.
Saugus Fire Chief Mike Newbury said Oxley was named the outstanding student in his class.
“This just shows how good our in-house initial training is at the Saugus Fire Department when this is a regular occurrence,” Newbury said.
Newbury told the Advertiser all five recruits excelled in their training. He wished them all long and healthy careers.
Water flooded eight properties after a vehicle struck a fire hydrant on Vine Street Monday morning.
Saugus Fire Chief Mike Newbury that the vehicle crashed at around 8:30 a.m. and broke a water main, which caused major flooding with damage to several homes and yards in the vicinity.
Four of the homes experienced significant flooding, Newbury said. Firefighters and Saugus Emergency Management pumped out a few basements.
The Department of Public Works isolated the leak and repaired it with Agganis Construction, Newbury said.
Water impacted a large tree that posed a risk to falling on a home, Newbury said. The Forestry Department took the tree down.
