CARLINVILLE Blackburn College is having its final monthly installment of its “Raise the Bar” speaker series at 10 a.m. May 22 about news literacy.
The virtual speaker series is free. The discussions offer opportunities to learn from Blackburn College professors and administrators as they discuss topics and share some of their life experiences.
The topic, “How to Fight Fake News,” will feature Natasha Casey, professor of communications at Blackburn. Casey has a doctorate in communication studies from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Her research interests include critical race theory and media and information literacy, the latter of which is one of the key themes of the panel.

Georgia is being flooded with election misinformation ahead of its Senate runoff races, with much of it focused on voter fraud. [We ve seen] a couple of different threads the idea of the election itself was not reliable and that a future election will not be reliable, said Dr. Amanda Sturgill, associate professor of journalism at Elon University and author of Detecting Deception: Tools to Fight Fake News.
She continued, This is part of a Georgia-specific narrative but also part of a larger narrative, particularly around the presidential election in the swing states.
