Austin Public Library top e-books in 2020: 'The Vanishing Half,' more

Everybody has coped with the pandemic differently, but many people are turning to books to escape lockdown boredom and stress. With library buildings closed to the public because of the coronavirus, 2020 was Libby s year to shine. That s the name of an app used by Austin Public Library that lets patrons check out e-books and digital audiobooks on their mobile devices.
Electronic resources librarian Amy Mullin said that Libby and the library’s other digital lending platforms have increased in popularity over the last several years, a trend that s accelerated during the pandemic. On Libby, readers checked out almost 1 million books from the Austin library in 2020, compared to about 600,000 in 2019 and 280,000 in 2018. ....

Montreal travel diary: On the joy of being alone in a new place

Austin 360
The boots on my feet weren t specifically meant to prevent me from wiping out on ice. I got them at REI clearance; I work at a newspaper for a hiking trip. As I walked through Montréal on my first night of a weeklong trip in 2019, I caught the briefest glimpse of what thrill Tonya Harding must have felt as she glided over a plane of frozen water. Except she knew what she was doing. I was content to avoid an accident that would further highlight a lifetime sans orthodontia.
After checking into my room at
Hotel de Paris, my boots and I observed that storied travel tradition: walking around a new city. Montréal at night in November is a placid kind of dark, and the streets are sparse. If you re lucky, the snow s small and quiet, like white noise for the eyes.  ....

Review: "The Femme Abstract" - Arts - The Austin Chronicle

Installation view, The Femme Abstract (Courtesy of the artist)
In these clamped-down, stressed-out, resource-stripped days of pandemic, we ve come to scarcely expect art exhibitions at all, much less ones that present wide-ranging surveys showcasing dozens of artists.
And yet, here we are, greeting 2021 with just such a broad, extensive show. Two years after heroically assembling work by 50 women artists into a single exhibition, artist and curator Moya McIntyre has made that monumental effort again. The number of artists in the second edition of The Femme Abstract may be slighly smaller, but the show itself is no less engrossing than the Austin Critics Table Award-winning first. Here are pieces by more than 40 artists spread over two floors in a former office space in the redeveloped warehouse at 979 Springdale, and the varieties of style and medium are so expansive that every wall, every room, every nook and cranny offers a distinctive and fresh exp ....

'Femme Abstract' art show in East Austin: Where and when to see it

Trailblazing women have written the history of Austin art.
Start with sculptor Elisabet Ney, whose 19th-century studio in Hyde Park became the city’s first art gallery and today shines as a small museum dedicated to her life and works. Follow that with the ongoing work of her admirers among the members of early 20th-century advocacy groups, such as Austin Art League and Texas Fine Arts Association (an ancestor to the Contemporary Austin), populated almost entirely by women.
It is true that the postwar generation of artists and teachers who dominated the new fine arts program at the University of Texas were, for the most part, men. Yet they were followed by the visionary founders of Women & Their Work, which since 1977 has promoted the careers of hundreds of artists as part of a program that is recognized and admired across the country. ....
