[아이뉴스24 정종오 기자] 남극은 접근이 어려운 지역이다. 인류가 보존할 수 있는 마지막 대륙으로 꼽는다. 남극은 지구 전체 기후와 날씨에 미치는 영향이 절대적이다. 남극 대륙은 호주 크기의 약 2배에 이르는 1천400만㎢에 이른다.
남극은 춥고 바람이 많고 건조하다. ‘차가운 사막’이라고 부른다. 연평균 기온은 영하 10도에서 영하 60도에 이른다. 빙상의 두께는 4.8km에 달하고 전 세계 담수의 90%를 포함하고 있다. 이 때문에 남극의 빙하가 모두 녹으면 전 세계 해수면은 약 60m까지 상승한다.
