Diaspora Re-Assessing Travel To Haiti As Expats Also Become Kidnapping Targets

AP Haitians march in Port-au-Prince last month to protest their country s growing and sometimes deadly wave of ransom kidnappings. Last week s abduction of a Haitian-American church leader in Haiti is a reminder that the country s kidnapping crisis may be an even bigger threat for visiting expats. On Christmas Eve, Seventh-Day Adventist Church Pastor Elie Henry of Miami and his adult daughter Irma were kidnapped in Port-au-Prince. They were released Monday night unharmed, according to Adventist spokespersons. Haitian media said their abductors had demanded a $5 million ransom, but neither the Henry family nor the Adventists are so far disclosing whether a ransom was paid.

Haitian media said their abductors had demanded a $5 million ransom. The Henry family has not disclosed if a ransom was paid.
