When Kelli Foster, who works for the Children s Home Society of Florida in Pensacola, gets a call from a homeless, pregnant mother, there are few places she can turn to for the mother to go.
She works primarily with runaway and homeless youth between the ages of 14 and 22, and said she’s had a higher than normal volume lately of pregnant teens and young adults who have nowhere stable to sleep at night.
“We’ve had more than the usual amount of moms that are pregnant and not in safe, stable housing,” Foster said. “They don’t have to be sleeping on the street, but they might be doubled or tripled up, living in a hotel, couch surfing, or something like that. A lot of these moms face these challenges of not having housing, and we just try and support them and meet them where they are. Our goal is to find them safe, stable housing.”
