May 12, 2021 GLADSTONE, Mich. Susan Joy Solka, age 77, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 9, 2021 at The Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba. Susan was born August 14,1943, in Green Bay, Wis., the daughter of Violet (Johnson) and Roderick Virgo. She was a 1961 graduate of Escanaba High School. During high school, she played the bassoon. She was a runner up in the Ms. Delta County Pageant twice and also was on the Queen’s Court in 1963 for the Escanaba Centennial. Susan furthered her education at Northern Michigan University where she obtained a certificate in secretarial work. She worked as a secretary for Harnischfeger in Milwaukee, Wis.

Jan 13, 2021 ESCANABA Dean K. Preaseau, age 80, of Escanaba, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Helping Hands Adult Foster Care Home in Escanaba and will rest in peace with his beloved parents. He was born on July 7, 1940 in Escanaba, the son of Lionel Vern and Eileen Stella (Sorby) Preaseau. Dean was raised and attended school in Escanaba and was a graduate of Escanaba High School. Throughout his life, Dean was a self-employed landlord of several houses in the area for many years. He also took great care of his parents during their years of illness. For 55 years, Dean had a booth and was the “King of the Wacky Wedgies” ice cream sandwich at the U.P. State Fair from 1956 until 2011. He was a life member of the Escanaba Eagle’s Club, member of the Escanaba Bowling League, and originally started the Delta County Men’s Pool League. Dean was known as “Skidmore The Bowler” to many. Sacheck began her career at Baybank in 2002 as a customer service representative. Over the years she was promoted to office manager, BSA officer, loan officer, and most recently held the title of assistant vice president. She is located in Baybank’s Gladstone office and primarily deals with mortgage lending. Sacheck was born in Ford River and graduated from Escanaba High School. She went on to earn a cosmetology license and worked in that industry for two years before joining the Baybank team. She currently resides in Escanaba with her fiance Matt Hughes, daughter Madison and stepson, Andrew Hughes.

LaBonte promoted to post commander | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 23, 2020 NEGAUNEE The Michigan State Police has announced the promotion of Detective Sergeant Matthew LaBonte to first lieutenant and commander of the Negaunee Post. As commander of the Negaunee Post, First Lieutenant LaBonte is responsible for the operation of the Negaunee Post and the Munising Detachment, and will administer all Michigan State Police services in Marquette and Alger counties. He started in this new role on December 13, 2020. LaBonte enlisted with the department in 2000 and graduated as a member of the 119th Trooper Recruit School. In his 20-year career, LaBonte has served at the Reed City Post, Gladstone Post, and the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team. He is also a veteran of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team. He has held the ranks of trooper, uniform sergeant, and detective sergeant.
