[applause] the National Book awards are a huge part of that mission, and it is a thrill to be here with everyone tonight recognizing exceptional literature and increasing the visibility of books which are among the most powerful weapons we have against what has lately felt like an often hostile world. I think this past year has felt overwhelming and disheartening to many people. Its also felt exhausting for women, for people of color, for immigrants, for muslims, for the lgbtq community, for so many groups. To remain on the defensive in nearly every waking hour takes its toll. For some of us, books provide a welcome escape into someone elses world. For others they serve as a valuable resource for arming ourselves with indispensabling knowledge of history. But all books offer something we need so desperately right now; broadened perspective. Books allow us to view circumstances through the eyes of someone else. They cultivate empathy. They inspire action. They make us feel less alone an

Tonight, the family of the woman who died says she moved her from china 16 year ago to help take care of her family in San Francisco. Tonight, kpix5s Susie Steimle reports she was stepped from her home in the ocean view neighborhood when she was killed. Reporter leanne wus niece says she was walking to the bus stop when she was shot. Now, they are hopeing to move her daughter to a safer home. We heard boom, boom, boom, boom, we heard gunshots. Investigation is still ongoing. They dont have much information. But as you can see on the southbound side, traffic is moving smoothly. About an hour or so ago, the car was towed away and at that point they opened both lanes of the highway. Right now, police are saying they dont know what caused the accident, but they do know that it claimed the lives of three individuals. They were inside a grand jeep at that point. We did drive past the scene. It was gruesome. A lot of blood splattered on the vehicle that were choosing not to show you at this point because it is disturbing. Were live outside, above the new jersey turnpike on the southbound lanes. I can also tell you that it is just north of the Walt Whitman Service Area but for now, if youre traveling in this area there are no impediments to traffic. Traffic is moving smoothly.
