ASHEVILLE - The North Carolina Court of Appeals has denied an emergency motion to stop the ongoing demolition of the Vance Monument, bringing removal of the marker to a locally born Confederate governor closer to its historic fulfillment.
The May 21 decision by the state s second-highest court is a blow to the last ditch efforts by a historic preservation group opposing the demolition of the monument to Confederate colonel and governor Zebulon Vance. But it does not appear to be the last word in a legal fight that could still halt the city s removal of the iconic 75-foot obelisk from its prominent spot in the center of Asheville s bustling downtown.
