As I’ve said before, our team at Noozhawk has been overwhelmed by the volume of reader response after managing editor Giana Magnoli asked for your questions about the coronavirus vaccine and its chaotic rollout.
But it’s been the subsequent heartfelt thanks from those same readers that has been the most gratifying for us.
A handwritten note from Hawks Club members Fermina and Steve Ferry of Goleta is representative of the kind of feedback we’ve been receiving.
“Your coverage of the confusing and anxiety-making process of getting a COVID vaccination has been spectacular for its thoroughness and clarity,” they wrote. “We have come to rely on it as our best source of guidance and background.”

Four people were arrested Thursday when authorities served search warrants connected to a double shooting near Goleta, and at least two allegedly are directly connected with the homicides, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff s Department.

Four people were arrested on Thursday in Santa Barbara after sheriff s officials say they served multiple search warrants across the city in connection with a double murder in Goleta last month.
On January 7, authorities responded to a shooting on Burtis St. and found two young men with gunshot wounds seated in a vehicle.
Enzo Marino Rastelli, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jasper Pieter van der Meulen, 19, was hospitalized and died three weeks later.
At a Thursday afternoon press conference, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said the two men were college students who were selling marijuana and apparently became the victims of a robbery ripoff. He said investigators recovered a 1/2-pound of marijuana at the scene and that there was no indication the two victims were armed when they were shot.

The second victim from the Jan. 7 shooting on Burtis Street in Goleta passed away on Jan. 29, the Santa Barbara County Sheriffâs Office announced in a press release that same day.
The victim was identified as Jasper Pieter van der Meulen, 19, a first-year student at UC Santa Barbara, according to a student death notification from the university.Â
Van de Meulen attended Dos Pueblos High School and graduated from Alta Vista High School in 2019, Noozhawk reported, during which he participated in the Engineering Academy, soccer, volleyball and cross-country.Â
According to a Jan. 11 press release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriffâs Office (SBSO), the two victims were sitting in a parked car around 12:30 p.m. when passersby heard gunshots and witnessed a subject fleeing from the area.
