Outstanding, interest and the federal budget goes up $600 billion a year, in a year. that s a big number. that s a number you can t mess with. then on top of that, neil, 71% of our federal budget is entitledments. no politician alive wants to touch that. so where do we pull this thing in? i think we have the capacity to get the job done. but i would be remiss if i didn t say it s going to take some pain and suffering. i hope frankly that it s more pain and suffering on people like me than on the poor people that are working from pay check to paycheck who are struggling to educate their kids, to feed their kids, to clothe their kids. these are the people that we have to worry about. these are the people most effected negatively by inflation. neil: bob langone, a real pleasure. thank you, dr. neil.
He could sign it at mar-a-largo or have a signing ceremony somewhere else. when he returns to washington d.c. and the congress comes back in early january, have another big event like this as a post signing ceremony. the one possible hitch in all of this has to do with a bill to continue funding the government. i m told the white house is confident they ll get a continuing resolution and continue to fund the government through january the 19th and they re also confident they ll get what are called pay-go waivers, which means entitledments would not be cut to pay for the tax cuts. if they don t get that, that would likely then delay the signing of this tax reform bill to the new year, because there s a complicated provision that the president signs it this year and don t get a waiver, the cuts to entitlements take place next year. if he waits until 2018 to sign it, they wouldn t kick in until 2019. the white house confident they ll get the waivers. you have to say the. had a big, big wi
The white house. shepard: they talk about cutting this money. it s entitlement programs that cost the money. those are the fixed payments. it s like i have to pay my house payment and my car and electric and cable and then i have what is left over. the entitledments are those things. they re a big chunk and hardly touch it. entitlements are a ton of money. you re right. and president trump promised on the campaign trail he would not touch it. he stuck to that promise. but that s where you re seeing push back. you were mentioned that mulvaney testifying before congress this morning. that was a big moment of the push back from mark sanford. from south carolina, very conservati conservative. he said 3% goal is alive. this is a goldilocks budget if you re not going to touch entitlement. shepard: i don t understand from reading the economists reports how anybody gets to 3% unless they say 3%. that s purple.
