When the brilliant Irish playwright Oscar Wilde arrived in New York harbor after sailing across the Atlantic, he memorably informed customs “I have nothing to declare except my genius.”
The same could be said of Urbain Michodigni when he arrived at Logan Airport seven years ago from Benin, a small country in West Africa. The resourceful 27-year-old had very little luggage but big dreams and boatloads of genius.
With little more than a plan to study English at Salem State University, he didn’t know a soul in Salem, had never traveled off the African continent, let alone North America. What he had plenty of was ambition and a breathtaking work ethic that has opened door after door.
