Why You Will be Charged to Use Green Park Terminus

Why You Will be Charged to Use Green Park Terminus The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) is planning to charge a token fee for certain services at the newly built Green Park terminus. The General Badi-led agency says the token fee will be levied according to the activities that will be allowed to take place within the terminal. NMS Transport and Public Works Director Engineer Michael Ochieng on Monday said the fee will be used to maintain the Sh200 million terminal. He said the terminal has to be maintained at high standards, which can only be achieved by charging the token fee.

NMS Transport and Public Works Director Engineer Michael Ochieng said the fee will be used to sustain the Sh200 million terminal to be used as drop-off and pick-up point for matatus plying the Ngong and Lang’ata roads route. Eng. Ochieng said the token fee, which is being developed by stakeholders, will enable the terminal operate itself in a sustainable manner rather than as a commercial enterprise. The fee will involve maintaining a clean environment, fumigation and safety measures by a management team that will be tasked with managing the terminus. He said the park must be maintained to very high standards and this can only be achieved by charging the token fee to ensure it is sustainable.

That was September and the NMS Director General said by end of November, all public service vehicles (PSVs) will be out of Nairobi central business district (CBD). According to Maj Gen Badi, the development was part of a wider plan to decongest the capital’s CBD and it was being finalised ahead of a launch by President Uhuru Kenyatta in November. The relocation strategy was to see matatus plying Ngong and Lang’ata Roads (Kawangware, Kikuyu, Kibera, Lang’ata, Rongai, Kiserian) terminate their journey at the Green Park terminus, popularly known as Railways Club.

NMS to relocate matatus from CBD in phases from January

Already, Green Park, Desai and Park Road Termini are near completion and will be the first to be opened as part of the decongestion strategy. He explained that the phased reopening will see public service vehicles (PSVs) plying the Ngong and Langata Road routes, which will be terminating at the Green Park terminus, the first to be relocated. Thereafter, the next step will be relocating matatus and long distance PSVs from Mt Kenya and those from the Thika Superhighway – that have been terminating at Tea room, Accra Road – which will drop and pick passengers at Desai and Park Road termini in Ngara.
