you re watching a bbc news special on the crisis affecting energy prices. special on the crisis government ministers say they have to prepare for the worst as the uk s energy firms continue to come under pressure from soaring gas prices. in the next half hour, we ll addressing key concerns and put your questions to the experts. but, first, how did we get here? in short, gas prices have soared. this shows their ups and downs between 2016 and 2020. but look at what s happened in the last year. it sjumped nearly four times 7 and it continues to rise. six suppliers have ceased trading since the start of september. the head of one of these firms has described the situation as almost apocalyptic and the future for other companies is looking bleak. among those to have gone out of business are avro energy with 580,000 customers, and green with 255,000 energy users, which ceased trading on wednesday. in total, 1.5 million households are affected by the energy firms going bust. it
