correspondent dan springer has the latest tonight from seattle. hiding nothing, russia sent out this video of its weekend war games conducted with china just off the coast of alaska and its aleutian islands in the entering sea. the joint military interests included 11 warships working on communications helicopter takeoffs and landings and the fire of missiles mock enemy submarine. never left waters but has rattled nerves. this is something we have not faced in terms of a formidable and dangerous threat like it since world war ii when we were dealing with germany in the pacific. u.s. northern command sent out four destroyers though shadow. two warships based in japan where the joint training began last month, one ship based in pearl harbor and the fourth in everett washington. the obvious thing that stands out is the increasing
extended period of time and search the surface of the water, whether it s for debris or if the submersible surfaced and lost communications. canada has also launched a p8 poseidon. this is a submarine hunter. that s what its specialty is. it has different ways of detecting the mass of a body of metal underwater. that s what it will try to focus on. the challenge is that this submersible is far smaller than an enemy submarine. at least this submersible wants to be found. it will search with sonar buoys. it will listen for sound. sound travels very well underwater. these can hear for miles in different directions. if there is some sound, you can use a few of these different sonar buoys to triangulate on the location of where this submersible may be.
