but, before your time here, there are obviously, as you know, been many efforts down this road and republicans won t get there unless the border security is first. so, there is all kinds of talks about a grand bargain and a comprehensive plan. but it never gets across the finish line. we re one election away from solving a big issue, it seems like this. so i guess how do you get there right now in this emergent situation? well, i think it starts with being honest. being honest means acknowledging that we have a serious deficiency when it comes to border security. it s systemic it predates this administration or this congress. the united states must be able to know and control who enters exits our territory. that s what makes us a country. we currently lack that capability. and in some places that may buildings physical infrastructure. in other places it means approval our ability to surveil the border and conduct enforcement operations. it also means ensuring that we
you see the fbi showing up on the scene, there s friction with local law enforcement, all of that is fiction. when you have an incident where people s lives are at stake, potentially, and people are in danger, you have the law enforcement agencies that quickly fuse together. and now in several major large american cities, police departments have their own full-time crisis negotiators, but the fbi is there to provide assistance across the country, should there be some type of emergent situation in a local law enforcement agency, and a local law enforcement agency needs their help. that s what we re seeing right now. the local law enforcement tapping into that fbi expertise. these crisis negotiators, many of them are regular special agents and professional staff that have other jobs, but then go through collateral training, where they become experts on communicating with people, and helping to peaceably resolve situations like we re seeing unfold right now in texas. and so this is where
