Donations put SPAC in the black after COVID wiped out 2020 season

SPAC leaders discuss 2021 following challenging 2020 campaign

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Saratoga Performing Arts Center leaders reflected on its reimagined 2020 season at their final meeting of the year, while looking ahead to 2021. The SPAC board of directors gathered virtually on Thursday for its winter board meeting to discuss the current state of the center and recap the 2020 SPAC Reimagined season. Like so many cultural institutions around the world, SPAC’s 2020 was remarkably different than what president and CEO Elizabeth Sobol imagined when the ambitiously programmed season was first announced in January. - Advertisement - “Just over seven months ago, SPAC took the unprecedented measure of cancelling its whole Summer season in the face of the worsening coronavirus pandemic,” Sobol said in a press release. “Taking that step felt literally like walking off a cliff.”

SPAC In Solid Financial Position Despite Challenging Year

3:13 Despite a summer season upended by the coronavirus pandemic, Saratoga Performing Arts Center is in a solid financial position for 2021 – even if the organization’s top brass is unsure what next year will look like.  In 2020, the SPAC amphitheater was not filled with fans – no residencies by the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York City Ballet, or the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. And there were no thunderous concerts by LiveNation including annual favorites like the Dave Matthews Band or Zac Brown Band. So the longtime arts organization pivoted to its “SPAC Reimagined” platform – producing over 50 hours of online content. Elizabeth Sobol is SPAC’s President and CEO. She spoke Thursday at SPAC’s annual board meeting.
