Last bank in Mountrath closing a shock for a lot of people

The announcement today of Bank of Ireland closing three branches in Laois has been met with dismay.
The three branches are in Mountrath, Durrow and Rathdowney. It leaves Laois with just four branches, in Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountmellick and Abbeyleix. Read more here.
Mountrath businessman Eddie Phelan says it will leave the western half of Laois with no banks at all. There might not be as many businesses in towns now but businesses can work anywhere now in the countryside, he said.
He said the news of the closure comes as a shock.

As builders, Doohamlet Construction, moved onto the site, work got under way in conjunction with Eddie Phelan of VCL consultants and Conor Hogan, quantity surveyor.
Branch chairman, Noel Heeney, said : This, without doubt, is a dream come true for us. We are just so happy to finally get to this point. The aim now, Covid permitting, is to get the job done as quickly as possible and to get our clients into the brand new premises, he said.
Mr Heeney said there were times when the state of-the- art project had often seemed to be no more than a pipe-dream.

The late Mary Kenny
The death has occurred of Mary Kenny, Upper Byrnesgrove, Ballyragget, Kilkenny. Peacefully, in the loving care of the matron and staff at Brookhaven Nursing Home, Ballyragget. Mary will be sadly missed by her niece and nephew, relatives, neighbours, friends, and her HSE carers.
In accordance with current Government/HSE guidelines and in the interest of public health and the safely of our most vulnerable, a private family funeral will take place for Mary with Requiem Mass celebrated on Saturday (23rd January) at 11am in Saint Patrick s Church, Ballyragget, followed by burial in Saint Finian s Cemetery, Ballyragget (max. of 10 family members in the church and cemetery). There will be an opportunity for the community to remember Mary by being present, socially distanced, on Saturday morning en route from Mary s house to the Church.
