going on there. a lot going on. welcome. i m neil cavuto, this is your world. till debt do us part. right now the debt is there. we re still stuck at a ceiling of 31.4 trillion. to hear the administration tell it and janet yellen warn about it, come june 1, we run out of dough. there s no more change. we re told that we re down to our last $88 billion. nobody can say whether that is the case or not, whether there s some wiggle room there. they re still talking in the oval office. let s go to jacqui heinrich what she s hearing right now of these talks and where things stand. hey, jacqui. hi, neil. the biggest news that you just touched on, they would not confirm in the briefing early and now we re getting confirmation that the president is cancelling plans to go to australia and new guinea after the g-7. he s slated to leave tomorrow. he took a lot of criticism for planning to be out of the country for eight of the 16 remaining days before the country could default on its
negotiating. he had garrett graves from louisiana talking to his gop members for weeks about hitting the debt ceiling. then you have the former staff director of the house appropriations committee, shalanda young will be negotiating with steve richetti. he was the chief of staff when he was the vice president. you might remember he s been a counselor to president biden for a couple years now. he helped finalize the infrastructure deal in the summer of 2021. these are people that are used to being around one another, negotiating deals and maybe bring it across the finish line. the time is tight as you say. we re listening to this trying to see if there s any progress. i was struck by something that chuck schumer said. he said i ll know it when i see it. of course that is paraphrasing
those days. let s just cut this dial. neil: i don t know how close we are to that henry cuellar, you ve been critical about the president s performance at the border that he reacted late. you were encouraged some of the things that we ve seen since title 42 wendt away. he did have a late response. i m wondering, are you concerned that he s similarly having a late response now and that is created new angst? no, i think what happened look, i think the debt is created by democrats and republicans. i do want to emphasize that during the trump administration, the debt ceiling was erased three times. i want to show that up the trump administration, 7.3 trillion were added. nobody woke up, nobody said anything. but as soon as you have a president of the other party then some folks will wake up and say we got to talk about the debt.
[question inaudible] come back when we re not talking about the debt ceiling. with this situation unresolved, the president is about to head overseas for the g-7. should he stay put and not go? the president is the president. he can make decisions on what is best. the president has now what has changed in this meeting is the president changed the scope of who is all negotiating. instead of the four leaders, he s finally taking leader mcconnell s advice that he s applied to him, the same advice that you gave to president trump and worked out and sam advice to president obama and others. appoint somebody from the president s team that can work with the speaker s team to come to an agreement. that s what the decision was made in this meeting. so the structure of how we negotiate has improved. so now gives you a better opportunity. even though we only have a few days to get it done, had we done
this. we need to change that behavior and make america stronger, less dependent on china hand curve inflation. speaker mccarthy, what is your left of optimism that this will get resolved? if this is where we were in february, i d be very optimistic that this would get solved right away. the structure has changed. we re in a better process. you want to say anything else? seven of the last ten debt ceilings have carried something else. what the speaker and are are abdicating is not unusual. it s more common than not. a perfect example of it is the congressional review acts that we ve been voting on periodically in congress to overturn was done on a debt ceiling during the clinton administration. so this shouldn t be this hard. number 1, we know we re not
