people figure know what the stakes are of their vote in november, in terms of the midterms, putting whichever party in control of the will among other things determine whether we re about to become a country that bans abortion nationwide. we should also just note, and obviously this is something you reported on as well as anyone on all of television. there is, i think 25 or 26 states that have trigger laws, that when roe is struck, down abortion becomes illegal that instant. you could be living in a state watching this right, now as a pregnant person, as someone planning on getting pregnant. where the afternoon this happens, your state laws says, the ruling of the court means that abortion is now illegal after this timeline in your state. and as we ve seen abortion politics, particularly in republican-controlled states get harder and harder and harder line, in a very short
roe and casey, potentially it opens up other things, as well. that being said, i don t think that s what the supreme court is going to do, at least right now. i think if they do overturn it, it s going to be on narrower grounds. they re going to say, well, abortion just isn t one of those fundamental rights. but big picture, it obviously opens up a lot of things, the idea that we don t have stare decisis with any of them and the idea that future courts could revisit them. and that said, what happens to the public perception of the supreme court? that clip in the introfrom that op-ed that i read in the beginning here, in which public confidence in this body could erode, emily, do you think that that could happen if roe v. wade is in fact overturned? i do. i think you re already seeing polling suggests that that is what s happening. and i think if it really does happen, it s going to be even worse. up until last year, you had the supreme court still striking down abortion restriction
