spoke with the texas governor and he s now ordering fema to send federal supplies and resources to the state. they need it there. as texans suffer, senator ted cruz is back in the state and doing some real damage control, or trying too, after flying to cancun with his family for a vacation while the people of his state were suffering. overnight, the new york times published text messages from cruz s wife showing that the senator, in fact, lied about the reason for his trip, more than once. last night, some of cruz s constituents protested outside his home, calling for him to resign. we begin, though, with cnn s natasha chen live in houston. progress on power, but still a water shortage there. reporter: yeah, jim. water is the issue. there are parts of town where water has come back, nbincludin this building, a furniture store, just started getting water back, but it s a trickle right now. and this is a place that s been opening its doors to hundreds of people each night
of its residents. texans are aungry and they re tired. we are boiling bath tub water. every texan s blood should be boiling this is even the reality we re living in right now. it s all about survival until it starts getting warm. people are dying. people are being poisoned by carbon monoxide as they try to heat their homes so their kids don t freeze. there are five straight days now of record low temperatures causing water mains and pipes to leak or burst across the state. it s pushing the water supply across texas to the brink. the situation is so dire there are firefighters in san antonio right now that had to truck in water because the hydrants were frozen and some hospitals are turning away patients due to no running water. the head of fema says he s meeting with president biden today to talk about what the federal government might be able to do here for texas. this extreme weather is also causing major delays in vaccine distribution across the country. white hous

while the lights are coming back on, it s revealing droves of new problems for texans to tackle including the ability to drink clean water, broken lines leading to tainted water supplies statewide. and there s a shortage of food at grocery stores and at restaurants. nbc s antonia hylton is in texas following all of it, uncovering a reality texas must reckon with. a majority of the pain is being absorbed by black and latino communities. reporter: here in houston, residents are freezing in their homes, with no safe water to drink. at this church in houston they launched a massive water distribution effort. people started lining up at 5:30 a.m., according to the mayor s office. i think that shows the level of need in the city. many of the people that we ve met today come from communities of color, black, latino neighborhoods, low income neighborhoods in houston. they worry they ll be the last residents to see their lives and resources go back to normal. and then there s the
