During their June 14 meeting, Madalyn Sukke, alderman-at-large, announced she will not be seeking reelection to the Detroit Lakes City Council. She joins colleague Jamie Marks Erickson, second ward, in announcing their plans to step away at the end of the year. Registration for municipal elections will be open on Aug. 2 and close on Aug. 16 at 5 p.m.
On the morning of Friday, May 20, firefighters responded to a house fire on the 300 block of Oak Street. Just days before that, on Sunday, May 15, they put out a structure fire that destroyed a fifth-wheel camper and garage on 170th street. No injuries were reported as a result of either fire.
A 61-year-old Detroit Lakes woman was killed, and two other residents were transported with possible smoke inhalation, during an apartment fire in Detroit Lakes on Jan. 29. Firefighters were dispatched at 10:26 a.m. to a call of smoke at the 24-unit Pelican River Apartment building on Loring Avenue.
