In a crowded Democratic primary field for the North Shore’s City Council seat, career educator, Troy McGhie, thinks he’s the right candidate for the job. McGhie has worked as a Department of Education teacher for more than 20 years, and currently teaches special-education students at Curtis High School, where he also serves as the boys junior varsity basketball coach.

The Staten Island Mall Carnival is scheduled to make its return this year, from May 27 to June 13, after a one-year hiatus due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, organizers announced Friday. For 25 years, the carnival has taken place on the grounds of the Staten Island Mall with rides, attractions, food vendors and a variety of games. This year, the carnival will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. weekdays and from noon to 10 p.m. on weekends. It will be open from noon to 10 p.m. on Memorial Day, May 31.

Born in West Brighton and raised in Port Richmond, John McBeth is a lifelong Staten Islander and longtime community activist who wants to be the North Shore’s next City Council member. McBeth, who currently lives in Mariners Harbor, is one of over 12 candidates in the June 22 Democratic primary for the race to replace City Councilwoman Debi Rose, who will be term-limited at the end of the year.
