and the one and only steve kornacki is here to kick off election night coverage as we get our very first exit polls in the california recall. when all in starts right now. good evening from new york. i m chris hayes. it s election night in america. just a few hours from now polls will close in the recall election of california governor gavin newsom. first huge election of this year. we ll have more on it in a bit with steve kornacki at the big board. of course once those votes come in, right, they get counted and we go through the mechanics of the election, the actual mechanics of which how you go from votes being cast to the winner being certified, you know, that s kind of opaque. we think of it just as a process where, you know, people cast their votes and then some stuff happens and then we get the final number and the person with the most votes wins. we learned last year that it s more complicated than that. there s an entire process. it s staffed by people, you know,
petition by governor greg abbott and house speaker dave falan overturned an earlier ruling. that ruling had determined that the two officials, both republicans, did not have the authority to order the arrest of their fellow lawmakers. ted cruz, texas democrats and all democrats across the country say they so desperately need. senate majority leader chuck schumer promising action next month but without any movement on the filibuster, there is essentially no path for federal voting rights legislation. let me be clear. republicans refusing to support anything on voting rights is not an excuse for democrats to do nothing. voting rights, voting rights will be the first matter of legislative business when the senate returns to session in september. our democracy demands no less. in a tweet texas democrats summed up the situation like this. in the dead of the night, ted cruz blocked critical federal voting rights legislation in the senate. this morning, texas republicans are hun
rights legislation. with majority leader chuck schumer bringing the for the people act to the floor this tuesday. but the bill will most definitely be filibustered mcconnell style despite a compromise from contrarian joe manchin which included a ban on gerrymandering, voter i.d. requirement and establishing election day as a national holiday. while the manchin compromise enjoyed a key democratic endorsement from stacey abrams, republicans were quick to offer their full-throated opposition. a revised version produced by one of the democrats yesterday, which has been endorsed by stacey abrams, equally unacceptable, totally inappropriate. all republicans, i think, will oppose that as well. joining me now, beto o rourke, former texas congressman, former presidential candidate will be rallying on the steps of the capital for support. thank you very much for coming to the sunday show. jonathan, it s great to be with you. and thank you for mentioning we ll be meeting this even
the south and but we have to do our job. the white house, the president made it really clear today where he stands. the house of representatives has already voted for hr-4, for the people and the john lewis voting rights advancement act. we need the senate to do their jobs, and it s not just about one of us. it s about all of us. and that s basically what the president said. if we want to make sure that we continue to have this democracy that we say we cherish, then we need to make sure that we pass these bills. so i m from philadelphia. which is in the same media market as your home state, delaware. so i have read a lot about delaware growing up. i don t think that delaware has the easiest voting laws in the country, does it? and you know what? delaware, just like other states across the country, have to step up. it s not just what we do on the federal level. it also happens on the state level. like you, i m also from philadelphia. moved to delaware. and so, yeah, we a
officials advocating for what they call the right to vote. we know changes to the senate s filibuster rules will be a major focus of today s speech because no republicans support the bills biden is pushing. so he needs to eliminate the republicans ability to filibuster in order to get them passed. not every democrat is on board with that change to the filibuster rules. not at the speech, arguably, the biggest election reform activist, stacey abrams. stacey abrams who cited a scheduling conflict. there is, however, a coalition of high-profile progressive activists who say they ll not be there because they re sick of white house photo ops. they want action on the issue, they say. let s get to cnn s jeff zeleny who is traveling with president biden in atlanta. we re expecting some strong words from biden aimed directly at senate democrats. jake, that s right. president biden will be delivering these remarks just in a short period of time. behind me here, between morehouse col
