A private contractor doing excavation work in downtown Eugene severed critical infrastructure that supports Lane County government’s phone system on Sunday. As a result, service to nearly all Lane County government phones and fax machines is currently unavailable. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office has activated the backup system for dispatch. Rural residents’ ability to contact emergency services via 911 is unaffected. The business lines for the sheriff’s office dispatch center also remain available. ....
