If you are seen as being unorthodox can, as you were saying, or as Party Loyalists would say unfaithful to the partys positions on these issues, you tend to get Interest Groups who come after you with funds. They will often mount a primary opponent that makes your life difficult. And there are all kinds of institutions now in place and resources in place that really keep the parties politicians towing a very ideological line on these issues.
