DeKALB – 70 DeKalb community members gathered to honor veterans and their service to our country at Memorial Park on Saturday. Michael Embrey, a DeKalb resident and Air Force veteran, spoke at the ceremony. He gave recognition to different people in the crowd that have gone above and beyond in their community to bring honor.

With all precincts reporting, Cohen Barnes has won the election to be the next mayor of DeKalb. He received 2,391 votes to claim 62% of the votes against challenger Carolyn Morris. Barnes and Morris met several times in forums to outline their vision for DeKalb, including a forum hosted by WNIJ, the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County, and the DeKalb Public Library.
The question of whether to allow backyard chickens in DeKalb failed by a margin of 53% No and 46% Yes.
The top three candidates for the DeKalb School Board District 428 are Amanda Harness, Ariel Owens, and Deyci Ramirez. There were five candidates in that race who appeared in a forum on April 1, 2021.
The two candidates for DeKalb mayor took part in a neighborhood forum Sunday.
About a dozen Kensington Pointe residents gathered on a chilly day to hear from candidates Carolyn Morris and Cohen Barnes. They gathered on the front lawn of the Rev. Marty Marks, a pastor for Immanuel Lutheran Church. Marks said he personally knows both candidates and wanted to create an event that focused on commonalities. He said the results speak for themselves.
“I was happy for the people who were here, said Marks. I was happy for the engagement. There were questions. Both candidates seemed to enjoy getting to know each other and even that’s just a net gain.
The DeKalb Public Library, the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County and WNIJ hosted a virtual, public Mayoral Forum where candidates for the City of DeKalb Mayor had the opportunity to speak.
