Judge Navi Pillay | SA's record on international human rights law is concerning

(Getty Images) While South Africa has often played an important role in a number of pressing rights issues, the record makes clear that its engagement with international human rights law is a cause for concern, according to former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, judge  Navi Pillay. She delivered the the 15th Annual Human Rights Lecture at the Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University on Thursday night. Here is her speech. In January 1995, I assumed my post outside the country as a judge on the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania. When I arrived, I was seen as the face of democratic South Africa. I am sure that that was the experience of many other South Africans who were posted outside of our borders.
