Common Grief Reactions: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance

Can grief be a good thing? Recently, I participated in the Toastmasters International Speech Competition. The title of my speech: “Good Grief!” With all of the losses we all have incurred during the pandemic, we may not recognize we are grieving – a lot. Using Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’ model of the Five Stages of Grief, I talk about how to recognize grief. The key is that we need to allow ourselves to feel what many consider “negative” emotions. Here’s the speech, followed by the text. I hope it helps you understand and feel better about all the challenges we are facing.

Malaysian grief therapist discusses shame and psychotherapy in new book

“Shame is in fact the root cause of most of the psychological problems faced by mankind, says Ng. When the first movement control order was implemented in March last year, grief therapist and psychotherapist Dr Edmund Ng started writing about shame. It is a subject that the 68-year-old licensed counsellor is well-acquainted with, having 15 years of professional practice under his belt. More specifically, he had recently completed a two-year field research involving Malaysian women who have suffered perinatal losses such as miscarriages, stillbirths and neonatal deaths, and had formulated an approach to shame-informed counselling and psychotherapy that he wanted to share.
