He is the chairman of the Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation and is the coauthor of books on the civil war, as well as hundreds of articles and chapters and additional volumes. He received the lincoln prize in 2005 and was awarded the National Humanities medal by george bush. A prizer, he received for his book, lincoln and the power of the press.
