top of the hour this tuesday morning, i m jim sciutto. and i m erica hill, it is a busy hour ahead to let s gigt rue to it. a horrific scene during monday night football, damar hamlin in a hospital after the 24-year-old collapsed on the field following a violent collision in the game against the cincinnati bengals. on the field reacting in shock and horror in those moments. medical staff performed cpr on hamlin for some nine minutes before his heartbeat was restored. he was driven out of the staid in an ambulance. that game ultimately suspended by the nfl. the bills updating this morning that hamlin did suffer card rack arrest after the tackle. we ll take you live to cincinnati to get the latest on his condition in just a moment. it was so hard for us to watch and i m sure for many of you. we ll do what we can to answer questions. and also a new congress begins with republicans in control. but there is still a battle underway. republican lawmakers are meeting behind clo
Very close together in this neighborhood. We have video just a few minutes ago. Firefighters tell us a gas line burning inside of the house has been keeping flames going and power lines in the area are burns as well. Police are now evacuating people from this neighborhood. Weve been getting calls here on abc7 news from people throughout an jose seeing the smoke and wondering what is going on. Its been kicking up first dark plume now another dark plume the area is prime yarly eichler homes. Scott arthur was on the scene and is live on the phone right now. Scott, how many houses are involved here . Well, we just took a pass by the fire team they kept us out of there because of safety issues. Looks three homes are involved. Homes, main home started was on fire when fire arrived was gusted the home west of it is also gutted. You can see through the living room window to backyard of the home i couldnt tell how much damage had been done in that house. Cars on the driveway have been burned. T
So these players are not going to forget what they saw on the field on monday night football. steve deassy. with daunte stallworth on last hour. he said that had this happened ten years ago in the league, they plight have zwjust started the game up again. the league has become more conscious of reacting to dangerous injuries but players are seen too much as commodity in this game and i wonder what your view is? has it change changed the nfl and has this changed enough? my son just finished a 13 year career in the nfl and vice president of a union and involved in a lot of different things and he pointed out they have scenarios now in place in case of certain emergencies like this. so, whereas probably ten years ago, they might not have had some of these situations in
Questions to handle. i love the sport, i watch it every week. but i also worry about the dangerous hits, they turn my stomach. i have had a number of concussions, i played rugby and my son just started playing and he s playing center and i m worried about him taking kids to the head. i asked this to daunte as well, is there something fundamentally violent about the game and that folks have to accept if they enjoy it or is there more that could be done to make it safer? i think there is more that can be done. there is advancement in the technology of the equipment and evens like this will expedite the research on how to make the game as safe as possible. but it is a violent sport. a path that these men have chosen. and there are other career paths out there that pales in comparison to those who serve in the military and they put their lives at risk for all of us. so there is room for improvement. the league is taking it
