The Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education will hold a special meeting on July 27 to discuss plans for three unused buildings owned by the district. The board was told during a meeting this week the former schools are blighted and should be demolished. District CFO Scott Johnson said five companies have put in bids to do the work.
“Bard Elementary, Martindale Elementary, and North Shore School, all three of the buildings have asbestos in them,” Johnson said. “Removal of the asbestos is required before building demolition can begin. Asbestos removal is specialized work that requires special equipment and special procedures.”

The Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education is no longer working with the state on a financial recovery agreement. The Michigan Department of Treasury had been negotiating with the district on a plan to turn around its finances. The last update was in October, when the board rejected a plan that had been proposed by the department and sought further negotiations. During a meeting Tuesday night, Board President Dashuna Robinson read a statement.
“Both parties have discussed and attempted to reach a compromise that would strengthen the district’s financial condition,” Robinson said. “In the past six months, the district’s financial condition has improved significantly, and the district is getting closer to eliminating its deficit. Consequently, the board has decided that is in the best interest of all parties to cease further discussions concerning entering into a financial recovery agreement with Treasury.”
