Four suburban spellers who won regional contests now will compete for the coveted championship title at the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., later this month.
Daphne Gil of Shepard Middle School in Deerfield decided to go all-in on spelling once she won her classroom bee earlier this school year. On Thursday night, she bested some of Lake County's top spellers to book a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Washington D.C. area in late May.
