On July 15, 2020, Josh lost his life to four bullets in the parking lot of Bethel AME Church, his cell phone lying next to him streaming video of a gray sky after falling out of his hand.
According to court records, Josh went live on Instagram video shortly before the shooting began, capturing the moments leading up to the shooting and the gunfire itself.
The incident stemmed from an earlier fight between Josh s friends and Anderson. Once Josh heard about the fight, he sought immediate “retribution, the arrest report says.
Josh, accompanied by two friends, wanted to confront Anderson at his house on Tuskegee Street. As the three were walking toward the house, Josh began streaming on Instagram Live.
“The video demonstrated that the victim began broadcasting as he was walking through the neighborhood,” court records read. “He was seen to be angrily cursing and making threatening comments towards (Anderson). The victim would hold the cellular telephone in such a manner to demonstrate where he was walking and his direction of travel.”

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â The Tallahassee Police Department says it has arrested a suspect in the shooting death of Leon High student Joshua Purcell.
Reportedly, the two told Purcell about the fight and he became angry, promising immediate action against Anderson.
TPD says one of the witnesses told them they placed a handgun in a backpack and the three began walking towards Andersonâs residence on Tuskegee Street.
According to the report, Purcell began an Instagram Live video as they approached the neighborhood and said in the video that they had a gun, but they only wanted a physical fight, calling for Anderson to meet them.
