Dr Allen, a former paediatrician and medical researcher who is now the federal member for Higgins, lost her mother Judy Stephens to lung cancer when she was 28. “I wish she could see her grandchildren,” Dr Allen said. “She begged us to get pregnant. Malcolm and I had just got married and I said ‘Mum I can’t, you are dying and I can’t do that’. She said ‘It gives me hope that there’s something to come’.”
