Could the Spike in COVID Cases Hinder Surfing's Olympic Debut in Japan?

Staff The Olympic contest site will take place at Tsurigasaki beach, 40 miles outside Tokyo. Image: Dane Gillett. The Olympics are less than three months away, and only 1 percent of the population in Japan is vaccinated. Japan recently extended its state of emergency orders until the end of May as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, with a reported 6,000 new cases per day. Despite the pandemic, the Japanese Prime Minister and the International Olympic Committee assured that the Tokyo Olympics will carry on as scheduled and will take proper safety precautions. No international spectators will be allowed and all participants are required to be vaccinated.
