Kane County officials will consider a change in county code that may open the door to 24/7 mining operations for the first time. Right now, such operations can only occur from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The amount of property tax money residents pay to Kane County may increase from $7.47 to $33.35 next year, depending on the outcome of one of several remaining decisions county board members have to make about the 2023 budget.
Kane County Board members voted against giving themselves raises, but they did vote to keep the health insurance benefits they receive despite being part-time employees. In a related move, the sheriff, clerk and treasurer will all receive raises and a cost-of-living pay increase each of the next four fiscal years.
Just in time for the 2022 elections, Kane County Board members will start discussions about possible tax increases and budget cuts needed to balance the 2023 budget. Everything from a gas tax increase and a new county sales tax to a 10% budget cut is on the table.
