A 73-year-old California man suffered lacerations to his calf Friday morning after an apparent shark bite at Airport Beach in Kaanapali, officials said.
The man, who was snorkeling around 40 yards offshore fronting the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort, swam back to shore on his own and was given first aid by the Westin staff, the Maui Fire Department reported.
The man suffered minor lacerations in the encounter at about 7:20 a.m., according to a news release from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. It said no other snorkelers or swimmers were nearby.
Shark warning signs were posted from Puu Kekaa to Honokowai Beach Park following the incident, which was reported around 7:45 a.m.
