LOWVILLE â Lewis County solid waste efficiency is getting cleaned up through a summer construction project set to wrap in October.
Construction on the Solid Waste Transfer Station on State Route 26 in the town of Lowville will involve an addition on the back of the existing building.
The new space will make waste drop-off safer for individual residents and decrease the potential for unintended harm by commercial haulers.
Residential customers currently walk into the facility with their garbage bags and dump them onto the same tipping floor as the trucks.
âItâs not an ideal situation,â especially from a safety perspective, County Manager Ryan Piche said.

LOWVILLE â The prospect of someone legally smoking a joint directly in front of the county office and court building door was enough for Lewis County legislators to revisit â for the first time since 2011 â making county building campuses entirely âsmoke free.â
The five members of the Health and Human Services Legislative Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday afternoon to send a policy resolution to the entire board for a vote that would make âcounty buildings and groundsâ smoke free. The law explicitly includes the use of tobacco, e-cigarettes and marijuana.
To date, the county does not have a policy on the books about smoking on its properties.
