time on hbo max. join us here on cnn the week after the super bowl to find out who is talking next. welcome back to the 8:00 hour of the cnn newsroom. i m jim acosta in washington. we begin with more breaking news. some of the first images we have seen of possible debris from that chinese spy balloon downed yesterday off the coast of south carolina. this video was shot by a south carolina resident just coming in this evening. this resident told cnn he saw a navy boat carrying what he believed to be debris from the balloon. cnn cannot independently confirm whether this is indeed debris from that balloon. we are reaching out to the u.s. navy for comment. in the meantime, this comes at the same time we are learning new details about when the pentagon learned about the balloon and when the president was informed about it. more on that in a moment. i want to begin in north myrtle beach, south carolina, and the focus of the recovery efforts. ca carlos, what can you tell us abou
range of colleagues have been working on this story all day and have learned the justice department has subpoenaed more than 30 people, people in the former president s orbit. people like bill steppian, donald trump s former campaign manager, dan scavino the former trump chief of staff. these are wide ranging subpoenas seeking things that have to do with the save america pact, donald trump s fundraising and political vehicle, information related to the fake elector spot, any information handed over to the january 6 committee, a number of them seeking documents some also seeking testimony. we also learned in the new york times tonight that investigators appear to have gone another step further with some witnesses including boris epstein and mike roman the new york times reporting both men had phones seized. cnn has not independently confirmed this. it is a sign the justice department s investigation is intensifying particularly as they are about to head into the quiet peri
Days. they do not expect this to play out for several weeks or several months. we are told once that process is done, they will go ahead and take that debris from here in south carolina up to virginia. carlos suarez with the latest from myrtle beach. we have more on the recovery efforts. alex, what can you tell us? reporter: the u.s. military is sending a salvage ship up that way. they are trying to get as many pieces of this balloon as its surveillance equipment in hand as they can. this debris field is about seven miles wide. they are encouraged by the fact that it is only about 47 feet deep. that is shallower than they expected. they are trying to gather as much as they can for counterintelligence purposes, to try to understand what the chinese government might have learned to understand the technology that was on this balloon. when president biden gave the order to shoot this balloon down, we understood he had two
Janet cannon is going to say but if she doesn t do something to satisfy the justice department and they appeal all of this, how long will it play out? it s hard to say. i mean, it could be resolved on stay applications which could be done very quickly or it might require full appeals. i would hope that they would be able to stay the portion of the order that they are seeking to stay, which is the restriction on their ability to use the classified documents for the purposes of the investigation. because there is really no basis to separate what the judge is allowing, which is the use of the information for counterintelligence purposes and for classified investigation information for the criminal purposes. we could learn if the judge grants the stay in the next few days. great to have you both on tonight. thank you very much. thanks, john. we ll get the very latest on ukraine s stunning rout of russian forces and whether it
York. for goodness sakes, he was president trump s lawyer for a very long time. he seemed to know a lot about the financial machinations of mr. trump and the organization. the senate intelligence committee, which by the way has sort of functioned in a more bipartisan way, that s damning with faint praise, than most of the rest of the congress, clearly they want to talk to him about this timeline. not to beat a dead horse but the timeline matters for counterintelligence purposes. and remember, cohen isn t there negotiating for cohen. cohen isn t building the cohen tower in moscow, right? cohen is there on behalf of his boss and on behalf of the organization. so that s why he matters so much. they want to know look, in the best case scenario, they want to nail down the facts and understand it. in the worst-case scenario, it s politics and nothing else. i agree with frank, we need to be very, very careful not to step on bob mueller s investigation here. it is at a sensitive moment.
