About 50 community members gathered outside the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History on a sunny Saturday morning to honor the legacy of lighthouse keeper, naturalist, activist and collector, Laura Hecox, whose donated collection of about 2,000 found artifacts and specimens became the foundation for the museum in the early 20th century.
"It's getting easier to do the work because it's not just a couple of voices, it's lots of voices," said artist Abi Mustapha. "It's certainly not perfect and there's certainly a lot of burnout and a lot of ways to go but I think it's the mess of the middle, which is better than the start."
