republican national convention in milwaukee, wisconsin. i m rachel maddow, joined here at msnbc headquarters by my colleagues joy reid and nicolle wallace and jen psaki and ari melber. we have chris hayes under a desk here somewhere. on days like this when it can be difficult to wrap your head around all of the news that will just not stop unfolding, we know you have every choice in the urld about where to watch the news tonight, so we re grateful to have you here with us. let s start with some of the day s biggest developments. just after 3:00 eastern this afternoon, republican nominee donald trump announced online that he had chosen ohio senator jd vance to be his vice presidential running mate. jd vance is 39 years old, he has held political office for less than two years before which he was best known for writing his autobiography. senator vance was famously a harsh trump critic in 2016 when trump first ran for president. jd vance at the time, again then, famous just as a
switzerland is home to 1,400 glaciers, of which aletsch is the biggest, and it s here that we find groups of scientists developing new techniques to watch the ice and snow and monitor their retreat. glaciers are water reservoirs that we have, which is important for groundwater replation. i think this is the important fact, but also if you lose this mass, you have instability in the mountains, so you have more landslides ongoing, more erosion. it is also a cause of natural hazards, avalanches, if there s a lot of snow and rock falls and similar things, if there s not enough snow and the ground destabilises. a very important one in terms of the energy transition is the hydropower generation. hydropower generation uses the water that runs down from the mountains and if there is not enough water, they cannot generate enough power. and if there is a lot of water, a lot of snow, they actually need to know this in advance to plan the generation. for all this, we of course need to
have called on americans to unite, after the former president was the target of a failed assassination attempt at the weekend. the fbi said the suspected gunman 20 year old thomas crooks acted alone. mr trump has arrived in milwaukee for the republican national convention, as our north america correspondent nomia iqbal reports. little more than 2a hours after an attempt on his life, for donald trump the show must go on. he arrived in milwaukee, where he ll be confirmed as the presidential candidate for the republican party later this week. the bloodied and defiant images of him are likely to define an election that was already turbulent. for president biden who is under huge scrutiny over his ability to run took the moment to call on americans to settle their differences by voting, not by violence. we can t allow this violence to be normalised. you know, the political record of this country has gotten very heated. it s time to cool it down. we all have a responsibilit
rate cuts by september from its current level of 5.25% to 5.5%. however, stubbornly high prices and a hotjobs market pushed back that timing. now citing better than expected economic data, it appears the federal reserve is getting closer to following in the footsteps of the european central bank and is preparing to cut rates, although mr powell did warn americans might have to get used to higher borrowing costs, suggesting that rates are likely to settle at a higher level than before the pandemic. in other news, there has been leaked data from disney, according to the wall streetjournal. the data came from disney s slack channels and included details on employment candidates and ad campaigns. disney has told the bbc that it is investigating the matter. china has reported slower than expected growth in the second quarter. that data was released as top leaders gather in beijing for a plenum meeting, where they are likely to discuss ways to revive a stagnating economy. the bbc s
