Underground salt caverns are commonly used for the storage of liquids including liquefied hydrocarbons. These caverns are created by solution mining of salt from inside underground salt.
Case law has been unsettled on ownership of the storage rights associated with underground salt caverns. In Myers Woodward v. Underground Servs. Markham, the Corpus Christi Court of Appeals held the surface owner owns the subsurface of the property including salt mining caverns.
