MARYLAND The biggest effect the coronavirus pandemic had on National Police Week isn t that activities in Maryland and elsewhere have been postponed, but the number of police officers whose lives and careers were cut short by the virus.
While their names won t be read at the National Police Officers Memorial Service until its Oct. 16 rescheduled date, they will be honored virtually during National Police Week from May 9-16 this year.
The coronavirus has been cited for one police officer line of duty death in Maryland in 2021, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Nationally, 63 of the 119 police line of duty deaths in 2021 as of May 4, just under 53 percent, have been due to the virus.

TIMMONIUM, Md. â Friday is the 36th annual Fallen Heroes Day.
It s a day which honors police officers, firefighters, and other emergency personnel who died in the line of duty.
The annual event is the only statewide ceremony in the nation that brings together all segments of the public safety community.
The Fallen Heroes Day ceremony is usually open to the public. Because of the pandemic, only family members of those killed in the line of duty will be allowed to attend in person this year.

MARYLAND In honor of police, firefighters and emergency medical/rescue personnel who died in the line of duty, the 36th annual Fallen Heroes Day observance will be live-streamed May 7 at 1 p.m. on the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens Facebook page.
The annual event is the only statewide ceremony in the nation that brings together all segments of the public safety community. Fallen Heroes Day, which is held each year on the first Friday in May, also is an opportunity for the public to show their appreciation for those who risk their lives every day to protect the citizens of Maryland. Including this year s observance, the ceremony has honored 190 Maryland first responders.
Vigil remembers fallen Greenbelt officer struck by car

GREENBELT, Md. - People in Greenbelt are mourning the loss of fallen officer Corporal Christine Peters.
Peters died Thursday after she was hit by a car on January 2nd while responding to a crash in the woods near Edmonston Rd. and Cherrywood Ln.
Officials in Greenbelt held a procession for Peters on Saturday as her body traveled from the medical examiner’s office to a funeral home.
Flags in Greenbelt flew at half-staff. The procession was followed by a vigil at the police department.
Advertisement She had a very unique personality and brought a lot of laughter to the organization. She was so beloved. Officers young and old loved Corporal Peters. So she will be deeply missed, he said.
