February 19, 2021 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com A local pastor is responding to an incident last weekend in which individuals disrupted her congregation’s service with racist taunts and threats. Last Sunday, February 14th, Julie Brock, the Minister of the Community Unitarian Universalists in Brighton, says that white supremacists Zoom-bombed their church service as they celebrated the legacy of civil rights achievements. The culprits, who were able to take over screen-sharing functions and began showing KKK-related images, also made several racist statements and violent threats against Brock herself. In response, Brock issued an open letter (posted below) to the Zoom-bombers in which she forgave them and stated that while she was “sorry for whatever happened” that filled them with so much hate, she wanted them to know that she was not afraid of them and that if their objective was to use fear to change her behavior, or to make her le

White supremacists Zoom-bombed church services preformed online by the Community Unitarian Universalists in Brighton Sunday, Feb. 14, while Reverend Julie Brock ministered to her congregation about the struggles and achievements of civil rights in the United States, Brock told MLive/ The Ann Arbor News Friday, Feb. 19. “It was totally unexpected,” Brock said. “Services were going along fine, then when I began talking about civil rights, a bunch of KKK imagery started appearing in the Zoom meeting. My admin was able to take them down quickly, but then I started getting direct threats messaged to me.”

WHMI 93.5 Local News : Submissions Now Being Accepted For Climate Change Art Show

January 18, 2021 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com Submissions are now being accepted for an art contest designed to generate public awareness about environmental protection. The 2021 Our Changing Climate art exhibition is being hosted the Huron Valley Council for the Arts, Environmental Council of Huron Valley, Michigan Rock School, Crossroads Group of the Sierra Club, and Community Unitarian Universalists of Brighton. Organizers say it is intended to act as a, “wake-up call that fosters an understanding of the need to protect the environment and call us all to action.” Tiffany Stewart, founding member of the Environmental Council of Huron Valley, said, “Art has a powerful way of connecting with people. In the midst of our climate crisis, we wanted to find a unique way to bring the community together, highlighting local artwork that speaks to people about the importance of protecting our planet and inspires people to act now.”
