Good things are happening at Missions Cafe

Sometimes good things really do come in small packages. Take for example the Missions Café on Third Street in Dover, owned by one of a number of young local entrepreneurs who believe that helping others is the most important part of their job. Owner, Renee McClelland, is a shining example of that kind of spiritually led business in this area. “When I was growing up, I was that typical teen who thought I was bored with church,” McClelland said. “I rebelled against going with my mother, and took a restaurant job that required me to work on Sundays.”  After graduating from Dover High School in 1998, it took the now 41-year-old a few years, a marriage and children, to see that was not the way life was intended to go.

Round-up of news from Horsley, Whittonstall, Acomb, Bellingham, Redesdale, Upper North Tyne, Matfen, Allendale

Christine Jewitt Winter arrived with a vengeance during December. Christmas was a chilly and quiet affair with our normal celebrations curtailed by yet a further lockdown and the withdrawal of the previously planned easing of restrictions with the exception of Christmas day. The wretched virus made it impossible for us to enjoy our usual festivities although we were resplendent with Christmas windows and a multitude of lights to cheer up the dark and wintry nights. There were also some spectacular starry skies to enjoy. We planted a Christmas tree in the garden area and various residents donated decorations. Our lovely vicar, Helen Savage, kindly held a Covid compliant Christmas Eve Carol Service in the churchyard of St Phillip & St James. It was freezing cold however we rallied round and sang enthusiastically if not terribly tunefully. There was a great turnout and it was reassuring to see everyone! We enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies afterwards and all….. at a distance.
