Tensions Flare Over Fate of Durham County Manager

Tensions Flare Over Fate of Durham County Manager Durham County Manager Wendell Davis Henry McKoy says Durham’s leaders like to “stand on the mountaintop and proclaim it’s the bluest city in America.” But the North Carolina Central University professor derided a statement by the People’s Alliance that encouraged the county’s elected officials to not renew the contract of Durham County Manager Wendell Davis, a Black man whose seven-year tenure has been lauded for its professional achievements but marred by in-fighting with county board members.  His contract ends in June but automatically renews unless the board votes to replace him.

Here are 3 ways Durham County plans to promote racial equity

Here are 3 ways Durham County plans to promote racial equity Charlie Innis, The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) Feb. 2 DURHAM Durham County leaders agreed Monday to take three actions to advance racial equity in Durham. One will address accusations of racism from within. County Chair Brenda Howerton announced plans for racial equity training for the five-member Board of County Commissioners and county manager. A new commission to tackle systemic racism and the designation of Juneteenth as a county holiday were two more initiatives the board agreed on at the meeting. Racial equity training Howerton called the present moment an opportunity for commissioners to lean into their collective discomfort and make our intention, commitment, role and responsibility in addressing racism clear.
