Salisbury council oppose calling for bypass or relief road

Main picture: Salisbury Guildhall. Picture by Spencer Mulholland. Inset: Traffic on A36 Churchill Way East. Picture by Tom Gregory THE City council has voted to oppose calling for a bypass or relief road for Salisbury. In a full council meeting last night (March 8), Salisbury City Council also voted to oppose a housing development on the field between East Harnham and Britford - but did not oppose the further extension of Rowbarrow on the opposite side of the road. A big part of the debate at the meeting was concerning the city council s response to Wiltshire Council s Local Plan Review - specifically, whether or not it should ask Wiltshire Council to safeguard land that could be used for a future bypass route.

The Salisbury City Councillors who opposed return of low traffic zone

Here is what they had to say: I don t feel it goes far enough Cllr Stephen Berry (Harnham, Conservative), said he felt the scheme did not go far enough. He also said he did not feel the motion covered the process needed to go through before a fresh proposal is considered. It was not people friendly Cllr Kevin Daley (St Francis and Stratford, Conservative), said he spoke to hotels, charity shops and other businesses around the city centre who suffered as a result of the scheme. One problem he encountered was customers at the Red Lion Hotel, who were unable to get to the hotel without a permit, which created problems for the owners of the hotel.

Salisbury city councillor John Lindley resigns from committees in middle of meeting

Salisbury Guildhall. Inset: Cllr John Lindley. Main picture by Spencer Mulholland. A CITY councillor resigned from two committees with immediate effect during Tuesday night s extraordinary city council meeting. Councillor John Lindley, who represents St Paul s, stepped down from both the Planning Committee and the Salisbury Neighbourhood Development Plan Working Group in protest at what he strongly considers to be Cllr John Farquhar s dishonest and dishonourable actions . Councillor Lindley has since retracted his comments and issued a full apology. Cllr Lindley had said he was extremely angry that the meeting was the first time that any committee of Salisbury City Council had met to discuss and formulate any response to what he described as the badly flawed Experimental Traffic Regulation Order/Low Traffic Zone - also known as the People Friendly Streets scheme.
