Route retraces Martin Luther King's footsteps from his only visit to Seattle

SEATTLE Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which celebrated the reverend and civil rights hero’s birthday of Jan. 15, 1929. King visited Seattle just once, in November 1961, and wasn’t welcomed with open arms. The Rev. Samuel B. McKinney arranged for King to speak at First Presbyterian Church, but the church rescinded the invitation a few weeks before King arrived. (The church later apologized.)

Why voting rights martyr Jimmie Lee Jackson reminds me of George Floyd

4:55 pm UTC May. 20, 2021 PHOTO BY JESSICA KOSCIELNIAK, USA TODAY I packed my bags, strapped on my fanny pack and dashed out of my Chicago apartment, rushing to catch my Uber. It was 3 a.m. on an April morning, and I was headed to O Hare International, the nation s busiest airport.  As I sat on a plane on the way to Montgomery, Alabama, I was thrilled to be working on my first big historical investigation for USA TODAY. As my Twitter bio says, I’m just a boy from Gary, Indiana a rough but nurturing place; a place where grit, intelligence, discipline, manners and street smarts are required to make it out.
